Lisa Hughes is the founder and principal solicitor of Virago Law, with a particular focus on estate planning, wills and succession law.
With a legal career spanning South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, Lisa brings a wealth of experience, practical insight and sound professional judgement to her practice. Her diverse background, including working as both a Crown prosecutor and a defence lawyer, has shaped her approach to the law and given her a deep understanding of people, relationships and the complexities of human behaviour.
Lisa is a graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She also holds a Master of Laws (Applied Law), majoring in Wills and Estates, and is a Graduate Fellow of the College of Law.
Known for her straightforward approach, Lisa believes good legal advice should be clear, practical and tailored to the individual. She combines technical legal knowledge with empathy, common sense and a willingness to ask the difficult questions.
Lisa understands that estate planning is about much more than preparing legal documents. It is about understanding family dynamics, anticipating potential challenges, protecting what matters and helping clients make informed decisions about their future and the people they care about.
She believes that effective estate planning requires more than legal expertise. It requires listening carefully, thinking critically and sometimes looking beyond conventional solutions to achieve the best outcome for each client’s unique circumstances.
Outside of work, Lisa is a mum, a recreational trail runner and triathlete, and a lover of good coffee and whippets.
She firmly believes in continuing to challenge herself, personally, physically and professionally — because growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.
